2. Re-scanning pages
***Some articles have pages that need re-scanning:
Scenes: Towards a sociology of marijuana use: Pages 42, 43, 45
Scenes: Communities on the north coast of NSW: Page 33
Scanning Articles And Converting Them To Text:
1) Scan pages you need. Make sure to scan them as straight as possible, because if they are crooked the PDF pen will get the text muddled up.
2) Once you have the JPG image drag the image and "drop" it onto PDF pen. This will automatically open the image in PDF pen.
3) To convert the image to text go to "Edit" then "OCR page"
4) Next, just select the text using the text select tool (top left on tool bar). Press command C to copy and command V to paste. You can either paste the text into TextEdit or straight onto the way out now website if you are logged in.
5) These rescanned pages will then need editing as detailed above.

Research and find the contributors??
1. To Edit Text:
1) You must be registered and signed in (you can not access the site with your Digger Street login, this is a separate website).
2) Have ‘The Way Out’ book to look at for reference.
3) Go to the Main Menu on the left hand side and click on “The Way Out’. Now you will see a list of the chapters of the book.
4)You can now select an individual chapter to work on eg INTRODUCTION, PHILOSOPHY ect. Click on one of the chapters on the right the individual sections of the chapters will appear. If the individual section has "Edited" or "double edited"written next to it it has already been worked on so just try another one. This project is already about 75% edited. Some of the articles will have FINAL EDIT COMPLETE written next to them, which means they have been fully completed and should not need any more work.
5) Once you find a chapter that requires editing, click on it and, once it loads, click the "Edit" button at the top right of the article.
6) Scroll down past the scanned pages until you get to the text below it. You are now ready to start editing.
7) Please edit the article in the edit box on the website, do not move it into another program on the computer (such as Microsoft Word) as this causes problems with the formatting when you try to copy the text back into the editing box.
NB: SAVE YOUR WORK REGULARLY JUST IN CASE THERE IS A PROBLEM WITH THE COMPUTER. YOU DO NOT WANT TO LOOSE ALL YOUR HARD WORK!

What Needs Changing?
The text needs to be formatted correctly. To do this, follow the steps below.
1) Reformat the text. See key at the bottom of the page for complete instruction.
2) Format the article to get rid of formatting mistakes from PDF pen, for example: “la rg e r” to “larger” and “plan-ning” to “planning”
3) You will also need to manually delete all the extra spaces that exist to bring the text into normal paragraphs.

4) If there are formatting problems with the article which refuse to be corrected (lines of text with incorrect spacing etc), select the affected text or whole article and "Copy"/"Paste" it into text editor, where you can remove all formatting and be left with only the paragraphing. (press shift + command + T when all the text is highlighted to do this).
5) "Copy"/"Paste" the unformatted article back into the edit box on the website page. BE CAREFUL NOT TO PASTE OVER THE IMAGES OF THE BOOK CHAPTER PAGES.
6) Read through the whole article and generally fix spelling mistakes random spaces, any other weird things. If you are not sure how things should look, just open one of the articles that have already been edited and have a look.
7) Sometimes the paragraphs will get mixed up. The easiest way to fix this, is to have the actual article on one screen and the one you are working on the other. This will allow you to use the original version of the article to see where the paragraphs are, so you can put them in the right place.
8) REMEMBER TO REGULARLY SAVE YOU WORK, BY CLICKING "SAVE" WHICH IS ABOVE THE EDITING BOX. You will then need to re-open the article you were working on and click "edit" on the top left again. You will then be able to continue working.
8) When you have finished working, put the word 'Edited' after the article title (located in a small box at very top of article) so that others know this article has been edited.
9) Once again, remember to save your work reguarly, if there is a computer error or something, you could end up losing any work that is not saved.
Which articles should be revised?
You should check if the title of the article says FINAL EDIT COMPLETE, this means that it has been revised and nothing should be done. Normally the articles which need more work contain the words 'miss text', 're-scanned' or 'work must be done'.
Below is a key on how to format the text, this will make the articles consistent.

- First paragraph starts 2 spaces below author
- No indent
- Leave a line between each paragraph
- Copy where paragraph starts as in original texts

Alignment: Two lines below previous text, aligned to the left.
Font: Basic dash.
Layout: All line dash and the beginning word of each point is aligned. If the text overruns one line it should not be aligned.
Footnotes within text:
Alignment: Superscript (Small and raised above text) and always following punctuation.
Size Font: 10
Layout: Double space between footnote reference. List as number, following number with a full stop and a space before reference.

Some Command Key information to help you edit the text as you may be unfamiliar with the Apple operating System. Command R = Rotate
Command O = Open
Command S = Save
Command A = Select All
Command C = Copy
Command V = Paste
Command X = Cut
Command Z = Undo
Command D = Font options
Command + = Zoom in
Command - = Zoom out
To delete something highlight it then press the delete key
You can also make the editing screen bigger by dragging down the bottom right corner of the editing box.
